Please use the “Make a Donation” button on the FireRoseProductions.com home page. This will link you to PayPal so that you may pay the entry fee, then e-mail your application form here. This is for International submissions only. When will I know if my play is a semi-finalist? We are hoping to finish reviewing by mid-June, and then we will contact the selected playwrights to make sure the rights are still available. We will announce the 21 semi-finalists by July 1, 2007. What is the prize? All Semi-Finalists have their plays mounted professionally at the Secret Rose Theatre as part of Fire Rose Productions’ ACToberFest. How many plays will be chosen? Twenty-one plays are chosen then divided into three groups that will be presented as part of ACToberFest in October and November 2007. What is the process like? A group of readers is selected to evaluate each play. Each play is read three times using a different reader each time. The plays with the top average scores are given to the Artistic Directors who make the final choices. Who are the readers? Professionals that have worked with Secret Rose Theatre and Fire Rose Productions volunteer to read. These individuals are playwrights, actors, producers, directors, technical directors and theatre lovers. No one isallowed to score any “self-interest" plays, such as a play written by their spouses, friends or associates. The reading atmosphere is quite relaxed. We often laugh, scream or gasp and enjoy this part of the process very much! Play Production The winners will be contacted with details. We initially ask each playwright for suggestions for directors. Director assignments are subject to the approval of the Artistic Directors. If a playwright has no preference, a director will be assigned. If a playwright wishes to work closely with their director, we will find the appropriate person. However, most of playwrights we have worked with so far have said, “Whatever. Just have fun with it.” We do not suggest that you select acting teachers or coaches to direct unless they have significant experience. This competition is not intended for acting teachers and coaches to promote themselves, or to showcase their students. Fire Rose Productions reserves the right to dismiss any person for any reason. What format shall I follow? Use a standard play format. For an example please see: http://www.indstate.edu/theatre/mhspc/format.htm What if my play is too long or short? Remember, this is a 10-Minute Play Competition. Part of our judging criteria for the finalists is that the play runs between eight and twelve minutes. If you are not sure how long your play is, we suggest getting together with some people and having them read it aloud. For comedies, we do take “holding for laughs” into consideration when scoring running time. What are things I should avoid? Movie Scripts Rehearsals Each play will have three ninety minute rehearsal time slots. I noticed many of playwrights are repeats. Do you show favoritism? Not only are these playwrights good, but they also know what we like. The secret is diversity. As Producers, we feel that it is important to present the public with a good product. For example, a couple years ago we had five good plays that all took place in museums and were all very similar in tone. Individually they were all excellent plays, but we selected only the top two since we want to present a variety of plays to the public. So, when you submit, make sure you submit different styles. Why do we have to send you a synopsis? Don’t you read the whole play? We read every play. The synopsis is to remind us what the play is about when we are choosing the semi-finalists. Anything else I should know? Please do not put your script in a binder.
