A Message from Fire Rose Productions It was in March of 1999 that we were frantically nailing down the seats in the Secret Rose Theatre, just one day before the opening of Fire Rose's first production ever, Madame Butterfly. The construction - which was supposed to take only six months - had instead taken fourteen months to complete, and we had just lost our beloved director, Mercedes Shirley. Watching Mike Rademaekers and I barely surviving on only three hours sleep a night, the cast of Madame Butterfly started showing up three, even four hours before rehearsals were scheduled to begin, just to help with the building, cleaning, and even decorating of the theatre. They made no complaints. We were all determined to make this theatre open on time and present our audience with a great show. We opened on March 5, 1999, exactly 100 years after David Belsaco’s original production of Madame Butterfly. And we somehow ended up with a “HIT”. Most of the actors stayed with us, and after each new production, we added new members. We are very fortunate not only to have survived, but to have continuously grown. Yasuyo “Pea” Chiba, Keisuke Hoashi and John Grant have been there for us since the night we first opened the theatre, and Brett Broderick and Dan Hirsch have always been there to guide the organization in the right direction. Theatre is collaborative art, and just as we depend upon a continuous string of magical moments on stage, we choose trustworthy, open-minded actors in order to make each endeavour a success. We have been fortunate enough to have discovered genuine yet ambitious people, all striving to achieve a common goal: to leave people a little bit happier than before they met us. Fire Rose Productions is one big family. All the actors and staff have all volunteered their time. They are all committed artists. The rehearsal period can be long and tedious, but no matter how difficult, when we see the show coming together and hear the audiences laughing, we always feel that every moment spent together to make it happen was well-worth it. Why we do theatre? (Even though there is no money and no audience for it in LA!) It’s because of something in our blood. We simply MUST do it. We all know that success is measured not by what you have, but what you have to share. (After all, we are addicted to the instant gratification of connecting with the audience). Welcome to our lovely theatre family.
